Effects of PID Controllers on the Dynamic Performance of Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR) For Power System Stability

Many AVR models have been observed to have unsatisfactory step response, giving rise to high overshoot and unbounded responses. A lot of methods have been adopted to curb this undesirable effect, starting from the use of stabilizers to use of different configurations of controllers. This paper examines the effect of proportional, integral and derivation controllers (PID) on the performance of AVR. The result indicates that PID controllers improve the dynamic response as well as reducing or eliminating the steady state error.
