Abstract

This paper discuses system outage or power failure and the associated problems. Research work and investigation in to causes of power failures have reached very advanced stages in many countries. As a result, the security of power to customers has considerably improved. Many developing countries are yet to attain this level of power stability, security and dependability. System collapse in a power system poses a serious problem to both consumers and the suppliers of electrical energy because this may result in outages or power interruption and demand reduction. Different types of system disturbances resulting n system collapses have occurred in Nigeria electrical power network in the past years. They could be caused by insufficient generation, availability, severe hydrological conditions, transmission line operations problems, voltage collapse, overhead circuits, equipment malfunction and human errors. This work points out all these.
